X64 The Lost Children of Melly

[G-F #40: Surprise Attack of the Mecha Waterspout]

Vax is out to conquer the island of Melly once again. Previously (ER episode 50) the Vorak had attempted to capture the island by starving its populace, but they had been thwarted by the Eagle Riders. This time they are taking no chances.

Avery and the Eagle Riders detect a large submarine force heading under the polar ice caps. Dr. Keane has already ordered the evacuation of Melly.

“I stipulate that the radar reading is a forerunner of perilous conflict.” notes Avery.

“Should we take away Avery’s thesaurus?” Hunter asks, to a rousing chorus of ‘Yes!’ from the other Eagle Riders. Clearly Hunter is threatened by this man’s IQ. Don’t worry Hunter, lots of people have a bigger vocabulary than you do!

Strangely enough, the attack on Melly also comes as a surprise to Olaf. He had no idea what Vax was doing. Happyboy states that he knew Vax would try ‘some stunt like this to catch Cybercon’s attention’.

“He’s trying to put himself ahead of us, and it will make us look bad if he succeeds!” Happyboy whines.

Cybercon appears, telling Happyboy that the Tornadobot he is creating for the blue one is nearly ready. But Cybercon hears that Vax is upstaging Happyboy.

“Perhaps you’d better sit this one out, Oldboy.” Cybercon sneers, before disappearing. Happyboy refuses to sit by while Vax gains Cybercon’s respect. He tells Olaf that they must stop Vax.

Meanwhile, the citizens of Melly are evacuating. Last time the Eagle Riders were there, Melly was a small island, but now their capital city is a thriving metropolis. One would think that these were actually two entirely different cities! But I digress. The Eagle Riders are in their individual vehicles flying over the capital city and monitoring the evacuation. Hunter orders Mickey to land at the Harbor and supervise the evacuation effort from there. The rest of the Eagle Riders move off for recon.

Arriving at the Harbor, Mickey sees four children running away from the dock. They shout that they are going home, and refuse to get on the ship. Their foster parents are distressed, but Mickey promises to catch up with them.

Mickey cuts off the kids’ flight in the middle of a flowery meadow and tells them that they can’t stay on the island, because it is too dangerous. They ask Mickey what gives him the right to interfere with them. They get angry and are about to pelt Mickey with rocks when their parents arrive. Seeing the adults, they give up and drop the rocks back to the ground. As they leave, the kids promise to punch Mickey ‘right in the nose’ if they ever see him again. Clearly these are deluded kids. Perhaps they should stay behind. Their personalities would fit right in with the Vorak goons!

Mickey is surprised, since he was just trying to help. He looks around the flowery meadow, seeing crosses placed on a low hillside. He wonders if this is where the kids were trying to go.

At ISO Headquarters, Dr. Keane is informed that in less than an hour the evacuation will be complete. Dr. Keane is glad to hear it, but wants to know how a massive force (such as the one Vax has organized) will be stopped.

Meanwhile, Vax’s submarine armada is traveling under a sea of icebergs. Even though the subs slow their course to maneuver around them, they are hit. But the icebergs keep moving to destroy the subs. Vax orders the subs to surface.

Turns out the icebergs are being controlled by Olaf, who is doing this on purpose. Vax is angry when he realizes that it is Olaf and Happyboy who have betrayed him.

“The two of you don’t have enough guts to do what I’m doing!” Vax yells. “But why couldn’t you at least stay out of my way?” Vax orders his subs to attack Olaf and Happyboy’s ship. However, their aim is quite poor.

“The next time you decide to strike out on your own, try to get some guys who can hit something!” Happyboy taunts Vax.

Happyboy and Olaf’s ship gets away, undamaged. I’m wondering why the Eagle Riders are so upset about Vax’s attack force. Clearly Vax’s men are completely ineffective.

Back at ISO Headquarters, all of the Eagle Riders (except Mickey) and Dr. Keane are puzzled as to why Vax’s attack force has stopped moving. Turns out, it’s because Vax and his men are escaping in lifeboats as their subs are being crushed by icebergs. Unable to see this, the Eagle Riders and Dr. Keane are simply astounded when the subs disappear off of their radar. But Hunter thinks that it’s possible the entire fleet went into some kind of stealth mode.

Mickey calls in to report that the evacuation is nearly complete. Hunter reports on the strange happenings with the Vorak fleet. One of the rude kids on the ship hear Mickey saying that the Vorak have disappeared, and assume that this means that they can go home.

“I had a feeling this warning was just a false alarm.” the kid whines. “I should have known better than to believe some kid in a leotard!” Of course, the kid leaves before hearing Hunter order Mickey to continue with the evacuation plan.

Now that Vax’s fleet has been vanquished, Happyboy declares that it is time to invade Melly ‘and sink the Eagle Riders once and for all’. Olaf reveals that the Torndaobot is ready to help.

The Tornadobot approaches Melly. It looks like a flying demon head. It opens its mouth and sends forth strange waves of energy at the ocean water. It sucks up the water, shooting it into the sky at the clouds. Then it heats up the water with a warm breath. Lightning storms and tornados are the result. Olaf and Happyboy laugh, sure that the force of the tornadoes they have created will obliterate the Eagle Riders.

At the Melly Harbor, Mickey is watching the last ship being loaded when he sees the approaching horde of about a dozen tornadoes. Technically, I guess they’re waterspouts, but we’ll call them tornadoes since that’s the term the Eagle Riders are using. Mickey hurriedly reports back to the other Eagle Riders.

Dr. Keane analyzes the tornadoes, and it is quickly determined that the rarity of this many tornadoes appearing at once, combined with the fact that they are all heading toward the same landfall spot, means that they were likely manufactured. To confirm this supposition, the Tornadobot rises out of the center of the tornadoes.

Dr. Keane advises the Eagle Riders that to stop the tornadoes, they have to wait until they are about to hit land, then counter-spinning the Ultra Eagle within the tornadoes’ vortex.

“The odds are against us.” Hunter notes. I’m glad he sees through this gobbledygook. But Hunter decides to do it anyway, stating that this is their only shot.

The Eagle Riders are all waiting near Melly, watching the tornadoes converge and approach. Back on the docks, the last ship is loading, and the foster parents discover again that their bratty kids are missing. An emergency is called in to the Eagle Riders. Dr. Keane orders Hunter to return to the island and see that the children are taken to a safe place. Mickey is told to lead the Eagle Riders to where the kids might be. But rather than taking them all to the flowery meadow and the graves, Mickey brings them into some tiny town. The Eagle Riders rush through the buildings, looking for the kids as the wind tears the houses apart. Seeing a broken vase of flowers, Mickey finally remembers where the kids probably are.

Mickey rushes to the flowery meadow and the crosses on the hillside, where he finds the kids huddled together against the wind. They want to know why he came back to help them, but then they refuse to leave, saying that there’s no place on Earth safe from the Vorak anyhow, and that this is the only home they have ever known. So, these kids are not just bratty and ungrateful, they’re stupid too! Frankly, I think Mickey would be doing the Melly gene pool a favor by letting them die. But of course, Mickey doesn’t see it that way. He listens to them whine about how the past has good memories, but the future is bleak. They’re a little young to be this defeatist in attitude.

Hunter and Kelly show up and begin evacuating the kids. Mickey tells the whiniest kid that she’s got ‘a great future’ and that she just can’t give up. Um, how does Mickey know this? I think he’s bluffing, but the kid buys it and goes with him. Mickey says that it may be tough, ‘but with help, you can overcome anything’. (Just to make a comment on the side here, I think the writers left something important out of this episode. The parents were ‘foster parents’ and the kids were at a set of what was obviously supposed to be graves. Why didn’t they just say that the children were trying to visit their parents’ graves? Perhaps they had died in the previous Vorak attack. Saban really dropped the ball on this one, IMHO, as it would have given the kids a better motivation to keep running away.)

The tornado hits Melly, destroying bridges and buildings. Happyboy laughs, saying that watching this is ‘almost as good as watching Vax in that dinghy’. Meanwhile, Dr. Keane contacts the Eagle Riders, telling them that the tornadoes have all joined into one ‘supertornado whose destructive power Earth has never seen’. He tells Hunter to guide the Ultra Eagle 5 through the turbulent exterior air of the tornado and into its vortex. Then the Eagle Riders have to attempt to use counterspin to neutralize the tornado’s awesome force.

“I’ve always really disliked blowhards!” Ollie mutters, as the Eagle Riders take off. They unite to form the Ultra Eagle 5 (Why haven’t they done this already?) and initiate Delta Power. The Ultra Eagle uses all of its power to break through the tornado’s exterior. The Eagle Riders make it in and point their ship nose down, spinning in the opposite direction to the tornado. Everyone appears to be taking this much more stressfully than the Fire Eagle or Phase Foil maneuvers. But it works, and the tornado dissipates, leaving the Eagle Riders to face Tornadobot.

“So this is the blowhard we’ve been looking for!” Ollie states.

Hunter instantly gets to his vehicle, jettisoning and using the Phase Foil to break through Tornadobot. The robot explodes.

“Tornadobot annihilated?” Happyboy gasps. “They’re going to pay for this, and they’ll pay dearly!”

Back on Melly, Mickey is saying goodbye to the bratty girl he saved. As he leaves in his individual vehicle, she runs after him, shouting that thanks to Mickey, she will never give up again.

“I wanted to tell you that I was wrong! You were right!” she screams. Mickey is glad he met the girl because ‘she’s special’. Blech.
