Dr. Keane examines Hunter's body to determine the extent of his cellular decay
Dr. Keane examines Hunter's body to determine the extent of his cellular decay.

X63 A Ray of Hope

[G-F #37: Revive Gatchaman]

Using the Phase Foil has significantly weakened Hunter. Dr. Keane is consulting with a world-renowned immunologist on the case. The immunologist shows Dr. Keane a display of Hunter’s body, with the areas of cellular breakdown highlighted in red. Hunter’s body is working very hard to counteract the damage, and so Hunter is very weak. His immune system just can’t seem to keep up with the cellular damage. The projected outcome of the damage is grim for Hunter.

Dr. Keane berates himself for not realizing this earlier. The Phase Foil was implemented without proper research into the long-term effects of the Phase Foil on human physiology. Hunter defended the Global Good without regard for his own body.

Dr. Keane relieves Hunter from duty, as his body needs rest. Hunter demands that Dr. Keane use technology to rebuild his body’s cells. Hunter declares that his body responds well to these treatments. He wants Dr. Keane to use the experimental T-Cell Replication Ray to bring him back to top condition, so he can stay with the team. But Dr. Keane feels that Hunter still needs time. Keane admits that the T-Cell Replication Ray might work, but it is untested on humans, and Hunter needs to rest and recover some more before attempting it. But Hunter wants to be better before the next Vorak attack.

The other Eagle Riders appear, asking how Hunter’s digital body scan went. Kelly wants to know how Hunter is feeling. Mickey mentions that he misses playing chess with Hunter.

Beating Ollie is a snap!” Mickey complains.

“I’m still the Parcheesi champ three weeks running!” Ollie rebuts.

Dr. Keane does not answer (Perhaps he is too astounded at the news that Ollie is the Parcheesi champ?) but instead tells Kelly to meet him up on Recon Deck, and exits the room. Hunter barely has time to break the news that he’s been relieved of duty before Kelly rushes off.

Joe says they will have to adjust. Still, he can’t believe Hunter is off the team.

“He’s such a great leader!” Joe declares. “I guess using that Phase Foil really took something out of him.” Somewhere, Joe Asakura is writhing in agony, hearing this.

Happyboy is practicing his fencing skills. He vows that he will never be defeated again. After this next mission, Cybercon will never chide him again either. The Earth will be his! But even more than that, he will enjoy catching those meddlesome Eagle Riders, and making sure that they never try to foil his plans ever again.

Happyboy’s sources tell him that Hunter is off of the Eagle Riders team. He is looking forward to giving the Eagle Riders ‘massive amounts of punishment’ for all of the trouble they have caused. Clearly Hunter was the only thing standing in the way of this before.

Kelly is flying a regular jet plane with Dr. Keane as her passenger. Dr. Keane informs her that if the technology they are seeking works, Hunter will be back as team leader. Nothing would make either of them happier, as ‘Hunter’s abilities are unique, and important to the Global Good’. Yes, that’s actually what Dr. Keane says.

However, a secret camera has picked up the aircraft. Happyboy and Olaf are watching the Kelly and Dr. Keane’s progress.

“I wonder who is flying around up there in that antiquated jet plane?” Olaf asks. But when the Vorak zoom in, they realize that it is Dr. Keane, traveling with ‘only one’ Eagle Rider. Olaf suggests to Happyboy that they take out their newest robot and destroy the two.

“I like it!” cheers Happyboy, and he orders the attack on Dr. Keane. “Now that his prodigal son Hunter is out of the way, it should make things easier!” Happyboy crows.

Obviously Olaf is slow in following his orders, because Dr. Keane and Kelly are next seen safe and sound at the lab to which they were traveling. They are looking at the experimental T-Cell Replication Ray, which was created by Dr. Ross. The Ray is based on the fact that humans are mostly water, and utilizes the Doppler Effect to help human immune systems. A wave frequency change is used to help the T-Cells grow disproportionately, which ‘supercharges’ them.

An experiment is performed, using a cell sample from Hunter’s body that Dr. Keane brought along with him. The initial results are good: Hunter’s immune system is quite responsive. But how long can this be sustained?

Kelly hangs her head as she watches, recalling a time when she was surrounded by Vorak androids, standing on the edge of a cliff. She wasn’t sure what to do, but then Hunter appeared from out of nowhere, fighting off the guards. Every time she has ever needed him, Hunter has been there for Kelly. Now she will do whatever it takes to help him.

Dr. Ross is amazed. He has never seen this kind of result before. Hunter’s cells are unbelievably responsive to replication. Dr. Keane and Kelly are pleased.

Olaf appears outside the lab in what looks like a stretch limo version of a tank, complete with two firing turrets. He attacks the building, supported by Vorak foot soldiers. Inside, Dr. Ross surmises that the Vorak found the lab by following Kelly and Dr. Keane. Ross gives them the Beam Nozzle from his device and tells them to get out of there.

Neither Kelly nor Dr. Keane can contact the other Eagle Riders for help. Dr. Keane assumes that he is the primary target, and he tells Kelly to take the Beam Nozzle and get it and Dr. Ross back to ISO Headquarters safely. Kelly accepts her orders, but gives Dr. Keane a grenade that ‘might come in handy’. She also takes out a few Vorak androids for him on the way out.

As Kelly and Dr. Ross are sprinting to the jet plane, a number of Vorak androids come running up, laser guns firing. From out of nowhere, other shots take them out. It’s Dr. Keane, shooting a rifle from a window. Kelly pauses for a moment to compliment him on his shooting, before she and Dr. Ross get in the plane and make a clean getaway. But Kelly knows that she has to come back and rescue Dr. Keane.

Back at ISO Headquarters, Joe has somehow gotten word of the situation. He is visiting Hunter at the time. When Hunter hears the news from Joe’s wristlink, he jumps out of bed, despite Joe’s protests that Hunter needs to rest and that he has been relieved of duty.

“How can I stay here when I know that Dr. Keane is being attacked by the Scorpius Force?” Hunter shouts, waving his fist in Joe’s face.

But just as Hunter runs out to the rooftop of ISO Headquarters (where the Eagle Rider vehicles are parked) he is blown back by a strong wind. It is Kelly’s jet, returning.

Kelly jumps out, and reports on the situation to the others, tears falling down her face. Hunter remains behind with Dr. Ross as the others take off.

Inside the remains of Dr. Ross’ lab, Dr. Keane and a security guard are shooting at the Vorak down a long hallway.

“You’d be better protected over here!” Dr. Keane lectures the guard, just before the man is hit by a laser beam. But as it turns out, even following Dr. Keane’s advice wouldn’t have been enough, as the wall behind Keane breaks open, revealing a God of War and some androids. Olaf yells at Dr. Keane to give up, telling him that he is outnumbered.

But some more blasts come from out of the blue. Two lab assistants take out the androids closest to Dr. Keane and wave him to safety. Dr. Keane starts up some stairs, a God of War following.

“Please, don’t come closer!” Dr. Keane warns, and he begins overloading his rifle. The God of War grabs the overheated metal rifle and it burns his hand, causing him to fall backward down the stairs. Dr. Keane escapes at the top of the stairs with the two lab assistants, but not before throwing Kelly’s grenade down at the approaching Vorak.

“He may be a scientist, but he’s got the heart of a soldier!” Olaf mutters. Despite this compliment, Dr. Keane tells the lab assistants that ‘it’s no use’ and that they had better try to escape. They make it to the roof of the building, locking the door behind them. But the Gods of War manage to break it down. Dr. Keane and eight other scientists and lab assistants are trapped on the roof. Olaf draws his sword.

“I hope that you’re hungry, because it’s time for you to taste cold steel!” Olaf threatens Dr. Keane. “I’d like to say it’s been nice knowing you, but it really hasn’t.” But just as Olaf strikes at Dr. Keane, the tip of his sword falls off, thanks to a strange light beam from the sky. Can it be? Yes, it is the Eagle Riders arriving. They use their vehicles to swoop down at the roof and knock the Vorak off of it, leaving Dr. Keane and the other scientists in safety on top of the building.

Olaf falls off of the roof, pressing a button on his wrist.

“I hope this works!” Olaf cries, as a giant winged robot panther emerges from the ground beneath him. “Now, we will take out all of the Eagle riders in one battle!” Olaf gloats, heading into the robot Panther. It takes off into the sky after the Eagle Rider vehicles.

Mickey shoots missiles at the panther that have no effect on it. The Panther’s tail lashes at Kelly’s vehicle, causing it to rock and vibrate. A laser beam from its mouth hits Ollie’s vehicle, and Ollie sits frozen in fear. But missiles from Joe’s vehicle seem to have some impact, as the Panther stops shooting beams from its mouth and instead hits Joe’s vehicle with its paw once it is hit. Joe is out of control for a moment, but makes it back to the fight.

Back at ISO Headquarters, Dr. Ross is calculating the exact amount of Replication Ray Hunter needs, because if he’s wrong, there could be dire consequences. But all that is on Hunter’s mind is the other Eagle Riders. He hopes that they are fighting well and that he will be able to join them soon.

Joe’s vehicle dives at the Panther, distracting it while Kelly, Ollie and Mickey shoot at the giant robot’s stomach. The Panther is damaged, but then suddenly the damage self-repairs.

“We’ve got a serious problem here!” Ollie gulps.

“Looks like these Eagle Riders are grass and Pantherbot is a lawnmower!” Olaf laughs as he pilots the Panther. Pantherbot’s jaws grab Kelly’s vehicle, but some shots from Ollie shake her loose.

The T-Cell Replication Process begins. Hunter remembers his past, and growing up, as well as all of the other Eagle Riders when the team was younger.

“We’re a team... got to help them…” Hunter mutters.

The Pantherbot slices off the top of a nearby office building, much to the scientists’ and Dr. Keane’s horror. It shoots massive missiles at Joe, but Joe flies over the Panther’s head, shooting it in the middle of its back. This appears to have some effect, as Olaf curses, but again the damage self-repairs.

“That thing just doesn’t stop!” Joe growls. But he has an idea. He plans to fly his ship into the robot and ‘wedge it just right’. Kelly says it is too dangerous, but simply tells him to be careful when she realizes that he’s going to do it anyway.

“If I don’t make it, just carry on without me.” Joe says quietly, before he almost crashes into the Panther. But he swerves at the last moment as he sees something on the horizon. It is Hunter in the Super Hawk! The Eagle Riders cheer. Olaf is angry.

“Even you can’t wreck my moment of glory!” Olaf vows to Hunter, as the Eagle Riders are forming the Ultra Eagle 5. Hunter initiates Delta Power and uses his vehicle and the Phase Foil to slice the Panther’s arm off. But the arm flies back and reattaches itself. Hunter moves back to rejoin with the Ultra Eagle, using the entire ship to fly through the Panther’s mouth and rip apart the robot. Finally, it cannot repair itself, and Olaf has to escape in a small pod.

Dr. Keane notes that once again, Hunter has faced insurmountable challenges, and once again, he has proven himself to be the bravest of the brave. He fights for justice for all. He is a true defender of the Global Good.
