Happyboy assumes the throne of Rajak
Happyboy assumes the throne of Rajak.

X55 The Document

[G-F #25: Sky Riders from Hell]

Happyboy is shooting clay pigeons for fun. He is interrupted by Vax, who informs him that plans for Happyboy’s ‘party’ are now in place. Even the ‘old King’ will be there. Happyboy asks about the new soldiers, only to see what appear to be bats materializing on the ceiling. Vax informs him that this is Happyboy’s new strike force: the Bat Fiends. Vax declares that these Commandoes will ‘mop up the place with those Eagle Riders’.

A party begins in an elaborate ballroom. Happyboy arrives to cheers and applause. Women find him attractive. He is the new ruler of the country and the old king will pass over the crown, as Happyboy has defeated them. Happyboy graciously tells the old king to ‘step aside, old man’. Happyboy walks up a set of stairs to a dais where a throne awaits. He gloats to himself that the kingdom fell into his hands like ‘an overripe fruit’. He believes that all countries will eventually fall to him. The citizens in the ballroom cheer and wave.

Meanwhile, Dr. Keane informs the Eagle Riders that the Kingdom of Rajak has just been taken over by Happyboy and the Vorak. Mickey points out that Rajak is a peaceful nation and probably didn’t put up much of a fight. Hunter and Joe want to ‘liberate’ the country, but Dr. Keane tells them that they have more urgent matters to deal with. Covert Operations has a lead for them to follow…

But Hunter thinks that nothing could be more important than freeing Rajak. Dr. Keane counters with the information that the ISO needs Marcus Levain’s dossier on Happyboy, and the Eagle Riders’ mission is to obtain it. Hunter doesn’t agree that this is more important, but states ‘as always, we’ll do what we’re told’. Hunter, did you forget when Happyboy first appeared and you threatened to quit the team if Dr. Keane didn’t do what you wanted?

Once the team has left, Dr. Keane tells Avery that he blames himself for Hunter’s attitude. Dr. Keane has been pushing Hunter too hard. But they need that dossier.

The Eagle Riders go to Marcus Levain’s home in civilian attire. Hunter tells us that the dossier contains the location of all Vorak bases worldwide, and this is why the ISO needs the file. Hunter demands the file from Levain, but Levain refuses, saying that he wants money for it. Hunter asks where the man’s scruples are, but Levain is only interested in money. Joe counters with the argument that ‘money can’t buy you everything, Mr. Levain, and right now we are fighting a battle to save our planet’. Levain responds that he knows this, and that the odds are stacked against the Eagle Riders. Joe stands up in surprise. I guess this is news to him.

Levain declares that he is a businessman. He obtained the documents at great risk and became a marked man by doing so. Kelly asks how much he wants, and Levain is appropriately vague, saying that he wants enough to hide away with his family. Turns out that Levain was part of the Scorpius Force. He knows his old Commander would pay dearly to get the documents back. Hunter is angry that Levain is so callous about the fate of the Earth, but again, Levain reiterates that this is just a business deal to him.

Hunter calls Levain a coward, but Levain pulls out a medal he was awarded by the ISO when he defected. Levain says he lost a lot of friends that day. Joe insists that Levain has to help the ‘right’ side, but Levain counters that no matter which side you are on, they will tell you that it is the ‘right’ side.

Levain laughs, telling the Eagle Riders that they remind him of himself, when he was young and naive; before he grew up. Rather than getting angry, Hunter simply turns the tables (ooh, he’s being intelligent today) by stating that he hopes he never gets as cynical as Levain. Levain is now angry, calling Hunter a kid.

Levain suggests that perhaps there is no file; that this is all a lie. He’s a known traitor, after all. Before anyone can respond, Levain’s children Michael and Mary enter, asking their father to go horseback riding with them. Levain unexpectedly asks the Eagle Riders to go with them.

Now everyone is riding horses in the countryside. Joe wants to know how this is helping the mission. Just what I was thinking! Hunter spouts off a lame line about keeping an eye on Levain before his macho side comes out and Hunter tells Joe he can beat him back to the stable. Everyone ends up having fun together.

After riding, the Eagle Riders bond with the kids, while Levain is outside with his butler. Levain is holding a letter that informs him that the Scorpius are ready to negotiate, and he burns it. He tells his butler not to let ‘those nosy Eagle Riders’ know about this. Levain drives off into the night, heading toward a port town. He meets Happyboy onboard a boat.

Levain informs Happyboy that he has information he will sell to the highest bidder. Happyboy points out that the plans belong to him, that Levain stole them, and now he has the audacity to ask Happyboy to pay for them to get them back. Happyboy points a gun at Levain. But Levain informs Happyboy that if anything happens to him, the file will go to the Eagle Riders. So Happyboy just shoots into the night, saying that Levain is sadly mistaken if he thinks he’s simply walking out of there.

A rocket-powered feather dart flies through the air, knocking out the lights. Happyboy is surprised, but quickly figures out who it is. He accuses Levain of leading the Eagle Riders to him.

As the Scorpius are searching, Hunter appears behind Happyboy. Happyboy just laughs and invites him to dinner; they’re having ‘roasted bird’. The remainder of the Eagle Riders land in plain sight around Levain, and Joe tells Happyboy that he is under arrest. Come on, Joe, do you really think that’s going to get any results?

Instead, Happyboy signals, and suddenly the air is full of throwing stars. Hunter barely manages to leap out of the way. The Bat Commandoes are hanging from the ship’s mast. As the Eagle Riders are distracted, Happyboy vaults over the side of the boat, escaping. The Bat Commandoes fly out, throwing explosives onto the deck and causing the boat to blow up.

Did the Eagle Riders survive? Happyboy doesn’t think so. He observes the entire scene, saying ‘Eagle Riders fall down and go boom’. Clearly a moment of this magnitude calls for juvenile humor.

On a nearby beach, the Eagle Riders and Levain are safe. Levain wakes up, saying that they have to get back to his house, because the Scorpius will go there, tearing it apart until they find the file. Everyone is worried for the children’s safety.

When they arrive, the house is in flames, but Happyboy is inside, searching through books. He says that the next time he does this, he’ll be sure to remember to bring the marshmallows. But a shadowy Hunter emerges from the flames, saying, “You shouldn’t play with fire, Happyboy.” Happyboy is enraged, shouting, “How dare you call me that? You’ll pay for your insolence!” Obviously he’s embarrassed that his enemy knows what a pathetic name he has.

The Bat Commandoes are hanging from the ceiling. They begin kicking their foot claws at Hunter, shooting him full of holes and causing him to fall to the ground. But it’s not Hunter; it’s a dummy. The real Hunter appears behind them, along with the other Eagle Riders. The Bat Commandoes form a cheerleader-style pyramid, engulfing themselves in blue flames. Hunter looks unimpressed, brandishing his Phase Foil at them. I guess since they’re standing inside a burning house anyway, more flames are such a big deal.

But the fiery pyramid breaks apart, sending flaming bat-missiles at the Eagle Riders. Hunter tries to deflect one with his Phase Foil, but is thrown back by the impact. Kelly is concerned for him, while Joe simply growls that he ‘hates bats’. Joe invites the Commandoes to show themselves, calling them ‘Vorak vermin’. A fiery light appears in the gloom, and Joe throws a rocket-powered feather dart at it, causing an explosion that catapults the Eagle Riders up into the air.

Everyone ends up unconscious on the floor of the smouldering house, except Hunter, who is somehow blasted through onto the roof. He sees the Bat Commandoes surrounding him, and they tell him to give up, casting throwing stars at him. Hunter rolls off of the roof to avoid the projectiles, and ends up hanging from the roof by one hand on the rain gutter. Hunter emits high-pitched grunts and moans like a little girl. Seriously, it almost sounds like background noise from a porno movie. Bad vocal choice for the actor playing Hunter!

The Bat Commandoes stand on the roof, laughing at him. Hunter can’t see a way out of this. The gutter breaks somewhat, and the flames rise up, nearly touching Hunter’s feet. More porno moaning from Hunter. Finally, he realizes that he does actually have ‘one chance’. Hunter twists around on the broken piece of gutter pipe, forming a whirling tornado and sending the flames back up at the bats. They fly off, screaming.

Hunter lands back on the roof, the flames washing off of him. He yells at Ollie to look for the children. Why Ollie? I have no idea.

But a flaming Bat Commando approaches Hunter and the Phase Foil is drawn for a mano e bat fight. Hunter holds the sword in front of him like a lance and charges at the Bat, and the Bat just runs right toward him, holding a rapier. I’m not sure where the rapier came from. They leap into the air, bypassing each other and landing on the roof again.

The Bat must be offended by the pass, because he tells Hunter that he will ‘never get away with this’. With what, leaping into the air? Then the Bat collapses into a heap and burns to death. There is no explanation as to why this happens. Hunter merely looks on grimly.

Levain is back in the house, in a section that apparently hasn’t been burned. He finds his kids hiding inside a grandfather clock just as the rest of the Eagle Riders arrive. The burning roof collapses in on the room, but somehow they all escape. Suddenly, everyone is standing outside the smouldering ruins of the house and both kids are crying. It looks suspiciously like their father is dead, but Joe pushes Hunter aside to approach the kids, telling them that ‘before they know it, their Daddy will be back’. He says that the kids will have a new home where they can ride horses, and the Eagle Riders will come and visit. Michael appears startled by this news. Heck, I’m startled too. Where did Levain go?

Meanwhile, Hunter stands alone, thinking how Marcus Levain has learned a valuable lesson: no one benefits from evil. That’s because evil does not benefit the Global Good.
