Mickey and Kelly urge Hunter not to attack Happyboy's castle
Mickey and Kelly urge Hunter not to attack Happyboy's castle.

X51 One to One

[G-F #6: Burn! Gatchaman Fencer]

The ISO’s intelligence people have uncovered the exact location of Scorpius Castle, which is the new Vorak Headquarters. Hunter wants to attack the castle full on, but Joe says that they need to talk it over. Wait a minute… who switched Hunter and Joe’s lines? Kelly agrees with Joe.

Joe attempts to explain to Hunter that it’s not a good idea to just attack the bulk of the Scorpius force when they are well fortified. Joe thinks it’s crazy and irresponsible to try to take over that base. Mickey pipes in, pointing out that it’s almost impossible to get through the Vorak’s regular missile bases. Avery suggests that Hunter think this plan through first.

But Hunter is tired of talking about it, and wants to do something. When Mickey protests again, Hunter says he’ll go by himself if he has to. Joe and Kelly say ‘no’, but Hunter insists. Finally, Joe says they’ll go along, because once Hunter has made up his mind, there’s no changing it.

Ollie finally speaks, apparently siding with Hunter as he asks what they are waiting for. Ollie then exclaims, “Let’s go kick some tail!” Mickey is suddenly excited at the prospect of this mission. Joe says that Hunter is as stubborn as a mule, to which Hunter gives a pleased smile, agreeing. I guess he thinks that’s a compliment.

The Ultra Eagle 5 launches, and the team approaches the castle in their individual vehicles. A huge formation of Vorak jets is there to meet them. Hunter orders everyone to get the Ultra Eagle 5 together.

The united ship shoots at the jets and easily destroys them. Joe notices that they are unmanned, and are part of an automated defense system for the castle. Hunter points out that the Vorak guidance systems need a check, because the jets can’t hit the Ultra Eagle at all. Eventually, even Hunter realizes that this battle was just too easy.

Happyboy is at his castle, anticipating the Eagle Riders’ approach. He has a surprise planned for them. He wants to take care of them for once and for all. Happyboy introduces Vax to his ‘extra large’ Scorpius Force (more of the giant androids) and declares that they will make ‘chicken pot pies’ out of the Eagle Riders.

“They’re big, I’ll give you that!” gulps Vax.

Meanwhile, the Eagle Riders are flying to the castle. Hunter notes that the castle is gargantuan.

“And it’s huge!” adds Ollie.

Cybercon’s pyramid appears, dwarfing the gargantuan castle. Cybercon sends out a giant Grasshopper robot to attack the Ultra Eagle 5, and Joe has a bad feeling about this mission. Like he didn’t have a bad feeling before?

The Grasshopper shoots at the Ultra Eagle, and Hunter goes to his own vehicle, engaging Delta Power and using the Phase Foil. He is impervious to the Grasshopper’s laser fire as he cuts it down. But somehow, the Grasshopper’s lasers manage to temporarily blind Hunter and he stumbles. This doesn’t faze Hunter. He throws his Phase Foil at the robot as if it were a boomerang. The Phase Foil cuts off the Grasshopper’s antennae, allowing Hunter to backflip to stand on the rear of the Ultra Eagle (while his individual vehicle rejoins the bigger ship). Hunter uses the Phase Foil again, ramming the entire Ultra Eagle through the Grasshopper’s head. The rest of the team cheers as the robot is destroyed.

However, it sends out a parting shot: a missile. The missile hits the Ultra Eagle 5, and creates a hole in the bottom, causing the gyro-stabilizers to leak fluid. Hunter is having a difficult time standing on the ship. He orders Ollie to switch to main thrusters and set down. As they do, a modern base complete with firing cannons emerges from underground, to surround the castle. All guns are shooting at the Ultra Eagle 5. Ollie declares that they can’t take any more, and crashes the Ultra Eagle into the castle walls as Hunter leaps off the ship. They are now in the courtyard of the castle.

Everyone jumps out and hand-to-hand combat ensues, with the Eagle Riders thrashing goons left and right until the giant androids (called ‘Gods of War’) appear. They throw their spears and flails at the team, causing the Eagle Riders to gasp and leap out of the way. Quickly, the team is surrounded by the giant androids. Hunter slices and dices a few as everyone else panics and runs.

But now, the Eagle Riders are clustered together and the Vorak are shooting rockets at them. A group of Vorak ninjas leaps out, throwing metal disc shuriken at the team. Hunter steps protectively in front of Kelly to fight off the shuriken with his Phase Foil. Joe simply uses his wings to protect Ollie and Mickey from these projectiles.

The firing at the Eagle Riders intensifies, and Hunter declares that the only way out of this mess is to do the Tornado Fighter. Joe protests that they’ve never done it before, but Mickey yells that he is ready, and Kelly and Ollie agree. Joe reluctantly capitulates. Seems like Joe just isn’t getting his own way today.

The get into a circle, and Hunter sticks the Phase Foil into the ground in the middle, shouting, “Delta Tornado, commence!” A blinding light appears, followed by a giant tornado in the center of the circle, with lightning shooting from the top. Some of the Vorak flee, while the ones who do not are destroyed. Ollie quips that the Delta Tornado ‘knocked the wind outta those guys’.

The courtyard is quiet now, and strewn with dead androids, but Hunter declares that someone is coming. Happyboy appears on a castle balcony, wearing his white mask. He challenges Hunter to a fight, mano e mano. He and Hunter leap on the castle turrets, engaging in a swordfight. Happyboy’s sword appears to be resistant to the Phase Foil’s metal-cutting powers.

Hunter quickly defeats Happyboy, but the villain just laughs, his mask falling off to reveal that Hunter has only been fighting a robot replica of Happyboy all along. The robot explodes, and Hunter falls off of a balcony to the courtyard. He gets up, challenging the real Happyboy to appear immediately.

Vax appears with another sea of androids, demanding that the Eagle Riders surrender. Hunter rants and refuses, saying that he is not going anywhere. Instead, Hunter demands that the Vorak send ‘that coward’ (Happyboy) out now. Hunter is making a fool of himself.

Joe calmly remarks that Hunter has ‘lost it’. He tells Ollie that they should get out of there. Mickey protests, but Kelly agrees with Joe. Ollie asks what they will do about the mission. Joe points out that if they don’t get out, none of them will live to fight another day. The others agree and run back to the Ultra Eagle 5, while Joe goes to get Hunter.

But Hunter refuses to go, even with Joe physically pulling on him and rocket shells exploding around them. Hunter yells at Joe to leave him alone, but Joe manages to drag Hunter kicking and screaming back to the Ultra Eagle 5.

Happyboy watches them leave from his lounge, and laughs that he doesn’t have to worry about the Eagle Riders returning, now that he has ‘whipped them into butter’. He boasts to Cybercon, and Cybercon admits that Happyboy has done well, and that he is proud of his creation. Cybercon laughs that with Happyboy at his side, he is unbeatable.

Back at ISO Headquarters, Hunter is in the hospital. He suffered a massive blow to the cranium (Is that why he was acting so idiotically?) and has temporarily lost his vision as well, as the explosion he endured damaged his optic nerves severely. (A/N: These last scenes are taken from Gatchaman Fighter episode 46, which was never made into an Eagle Riders episode.)

Mickey wants to visit Hunter, but Joe tells him that Hunter shouldn’t have any more visitors. Kelly is already with him. Mickey is disappointed.

With Hunter, Kelly declares that Hunter just has to be all right, because she doesn’t know what she would do without him. She has a number of flashbacks to times when Hunter protected her in battle, and to a time when they held hands running together. She holds his hand now, as he lies in the hospital bed, and she says that he has always looked out for her. If only she could reach him.

In his mind, Hunter is imagining himself in the midst of a fire, being attacked by small blackbirds. He screams, as Happyboy laughs and taunts him. But then, Hunter hears Dr. Keane’s voice encouraging him. Hunter stands up, looking into a suddenly clear sky, seeing Dr. Keane and his father among the clouds. Harley tells Hunter not to be a hothead, and Hunter replies, “I can’t help it; I learned from the best, Dad!” Dr. Keane tells Hunter to throw his energy into getting well. Hunter’s dream ends, but he does not awaken. Kelly is called away to defend against another Vorak attack. After she leaves, Hunter awakens, vowing to never let the Vorak destroy the Global Good.
