X46 Allegiance and Amends
[G-II #51: Gel Sadra's Lament]
Dr. Keane is searching outer space for Dr. Aikens’ rocket, but having no luck. Meanwhile, Professor Andro is still in serious condition, and can’t help with Joe’s recovery. Joe is still exhausted.
Dr. Keane performs scans of Joe’s body, and discovers the last implant that Andro gave to Joe: a small device next to his heart. Dr. Keane speculates that it is a secondary power source for Joe, however later in the episode he realizes that it is, in fact, a neutron bomb.
Since he is exhausted, Joe is ordered to stay behind while the rest of the Eagle Riders go destroy the Main Beam Cannon. In a shocking twist of events, Joe wants to go too, despite his exhaustion. Duh.
Joe tells Hunter that if the team goes without Joe, Joe will never forgive Hunter. Hunter goes anyway, under Dr. Keane’s orders. I guess we know Hunter’s true priorities.
Of course, once the Ultra Eagle is in the air, Dr. Keane informs the team that Joe has run off anyway. Clearly Dr. Keane hasn’t learned his lesson to watch Joe carefully every time he is ordered to be left behind. I thought Dr. Keane was supposed to be smart! Maybe the loss of Dr. Aikens is hitting him hard.
Meanwhile, Mallanox has discovered what will happen when the Main Beam Cannon is activated: the Earth will be destroyed! He will be master of the Earth, but the Earth will be gone. Mallanox goes insane with the knowledge of this irony.
A Stealth Bat robot attacks the approaching Eagle Riders, sending a flame attack at the Ultra Eagle. Despite the fact that this ship can endure the Fire Eagle Maneuver, the flame attack appears to be a problem. None of the Ultra Eagle’s weapons seem to work on the Stealth Bat robot.
Hunter decides to go out and attack in the Super Hawk, and inexplicably is able to destroy the robot with one missile, even though the entire Ultra Eagle wasn’t able to do anything.
Cybercon activates the Lesser Beam Cannons, then prepares to fire the Main Beam Cannon. But when Cybercon presses the button, nothing happens. Mallanox bursts in, explaining that he has pulled the plug… literally. He holds up a batch of wires to show the infuriated Cybercon. Seems that Mallanox’s brain cells have finally matured to match his body, and he now understands what’s really going on here.
Mallanox then grabs a gun and shoots at the Main Beam Cannon, destroying it, before escaping in his usual pod. The Vorak, now recognizing that Mallanox is a traitor, shoot at the pod as it leaves. The pod crash lands nearby.
Hunter follows Mallanox’s ship in the Super Hawk, while the others return to base in the Ultra Eagle, since it was incredibly damaged and requires repair. Unbeknownst to anyone, Joe also lands on the same island. He has managed to power up inside the Vorak base, using their equipment, and is no longer exhausted. Literally, he grabbed some electrical conduits and was surrounded by an electric nimbus, crackling with power as he charged up like a battery. Very cool.
Hunter confronts Mallanox, asking why the Vorak were shooting at Mallanox’s ship. Hunter is dubious when Mallanox states that he has turned against Cybercon. A Vorak soldier pops up behind Hunter to attack him, but Joe appears suddenly and saves Hunter. Joe then punches Hunter in the gut, knocking him out, saying that this mission is for Joe alone. So much for a ‘team effort’…
Joe forces Mallanox to lead him to Cybercon. Mallanox complains the entire way. I guess Mallanox’s character hasn’t completely changed since discovering all of this information about his origins and Cybercon’s true plans.
The odd pair approach a strange metallic object floating above the air in the middle of ice-covered mountains, and enter through a strange force field.
