X42 Fire and Ice

[G-II #47: The Two Firebirds' Fatal Blow!]

The Earth is still being ravaged by the effects of the Solar Shifter Plan, and the Vorak are building and rebuilding bases at an incredible rate. Dr. Keane informs the team that the Vorak are also building new bases on Mars, Venus, and Mercury.

Gateway City, being a giant submarine, moves north to stop an iceberg from drifting into warmer climes (where it could melt and cause more flooding on the planet). Dr. Keane sends Dr. Aikens to monitor conditions at Harbor City, which would be most impacted by such flooding. However, the movement of the iceberg is actually a ploy by the Vorak to capture Gateway City and the Eagle Riders.

Vorak Commandoes infiltrate Gateway City and take out a number of systems, including security and communications, as well as their backup systems. It’s probably okay that the security system is down, because clearly it wasn’t doing its job to keep out intruders anyhow. But the rest of this dirty work is causing problems.

However the Eagle Riders and Dr. Keane are able to figure out that it this is sabotage (and not just mechanical failure). Ken and Joe rush off to investigate without even asking for permission. Belatedly, Dr. Keane tells Kelly, Mickey and Ollie to join them.

Together, the five take out the Commandoes, but it is too late. Gateway City is without power and is being pushed into a giant ocean crevasse, where it falls and is immobilized.

If this were all, Dr. Keane states that they could simply change the buoyancy level of the base to surface for repairs, but Mallanox has foreseen this and has used his latest robot to push the icebergs above the crevasse, trapping Gateway City inside.

The team agrees that the best way to melt the ice and surface the Gateway City submarine would be to use the Fire Eagle Maneuver to punch a hole in the iceberg. But since the power is out, the team cannot get to the Ultra Eagle Bay. As they try (by using their guns on sealed doors) they contact Dr. Aikens, who is diverted from her Harbor City mission to pick up the Ultra Eagle 1, the prototype for the current Ultra Eagle. Apparently Dr. Keane has kept this older ship in tip-top condition. Perhaps tinkering with old warships is Dr. Keane’s hobby?

Dr. Aikens flies the Ultra Eagle 1 to the icebergs above the trapped base and engages the Fire Eagle Mode, punching a hole in the ice just as the team is able to get to their own Ultra Eagle. They escape Gateway City by ramming right through the Docking Bay walls, then enter their own Fire Eagle Mode once free of the water. I’m not sure how Dr. Aiken’s actions were helpful, since the Eagle Riders were able to access their ship and enter Fire Eagle Mode all on their own. But I guess it made for a dramatic story!

In the meantime, Mallanox, not understanding that it is Dr. Aikens in the original Ultra Eagle, has launched an attack at the Firebird in the sky. Dr. Aikens is in trouble. A second Fire Eagle approaches from behind Mallanox’s robot, and together the two Firebirds burn through the latest Vorak ship, setting Mallanox adrift in the chilly ocean waters.
