X38 Krall

[G-II #43: Invaders from Mars]

The Viking X16 is an unmanned exploratory space rocket on a mission to Mars. One hundred miles from the red planet, the rocket is destroyed, but the technicians and scientists on Earth can’t figure out why or how.

Except Dr. Keane. He suspects Vorak involvement, and reiterates this to Director Anderson when they learn that Space Base 2 on Sabina Island has been destroyed. They never mention what happened to Space Base 1. Perhaps that’s inhabited by 7-Zark-7 in another dimension? Why the Global Security Council has Space Bases on the planet Earth (as opposed to actually in space) is also not explained.

Guessing that Space Base 3 is next (Dr. Keane, you are so brilliant! Whatever would we do without you?) Keane sends the Eagle Riders to Sabina Island to protect it. Yes, apparently Space Base 2 and Space Base 3 are on the same Island. This is also not explained.

Mallanox is talking to Cybercon. It turns out that Mallanox did not destroy the Viking X16 or Space Base 2. Someone else did, and Cybercon is pleased with them. Mallanox, desperate to regain Cybercon’s favor, promises to do a good job destroying Space Base 3.

The personnel at Space Base 3 are warned of a possible attack, and check out the entire base. Except Underground Hangar 3, which is where the Vorak decide to enter. The androids crash in with a few robots and vaporize all resistance, including (gasp!) real people who are defending the base. Actual dead humans here. Well, I guess since they’re vaporized they’re not actually here, but you know what I mean.

The Ultra Eagle arrives in time to see a giant orange UFO leaving the base. It looks suspiciously like Mallanox’s escape pod, only significantly bigger, and without the spiky things on top and bottom.

Just as they are examining it, the UFO sends out some kind of energy attack and damages the Ultra Eagle. The ship loses its left wing stabilizers, as well as the capability to shoot missiles (that really angers Joe) and backup systems. All the Ultra Eagle can do is crash and burn on the ground. Yes, really, the ship appears to be completely totaled.

Enter Mallanox. Seems he was not on the orange UFO at all! Instead, it was piloted by someone else. This stranger taunts Mallanox and states that Mallanox is a failure. This burns Mallanox, especially as he has no idea who this person is.

It turns out that this person is Krall, another one of Cybercon’s minions. He has successfully built a Vorak base on Mars for the Solar Shifter and laughs at Mallanox, because Mallanox has been unable to build a similar base on Earth. Krall states that he will take care of the Eagle Riders, while Mallanox is constructing a base on Earth.

Meanwhile, Dr. Keane informs the Eagle Riders that the Ultra Eagle is so badly damaged that it will take months to repair. However, Space Base 4 (on the Aegean Sea this time, instead of Sabina Island) is being threatened, and Dr. Keane orders the team out to protect it on their individual vehicles, which seem to have survived the previous crash.

Even as the Eagle Riders approach, Space Base 4 is being attacked by robots, but our heroes swoop in and destroy their enemies, despite the temporary setback of Kelly falling off of her Dove Cycle (Mickey saves her from being toasted by a robot so she can get back on).

Viking Rocket X17 was sent into space to protect it from exactly this kind of attack, but apparently Krall destroyed that as well during this encounter. So there has been a price for saving Space Base 4.

The Eagle Riders are temporarily successful, but they know that this new Vorak Krall is out to get them. Not only that, the Ultra Eagle is down. Krall is much more ruthless than Mallanox. The Solar Shifter base on Mars still exists. Will this be the end of the Eagle Riders?
