X30 Adventure in the Amazon

[G-II #34: Demon Monstermech of the Amazon]

In South America, the Amazon River has been forced from its usual course, and is causing massive devastation to the rainforest. The Eagle Riders are sent to investigate, as the causes do not look to be of natural origin.

While scouting the area in their individual vehicles, a large metallic tentacle emerges from the river and sprays the Bird of Paradise with water, causing Mickey to lose control of his helicopter. Honestly, Mickey must not be much of a pilot if a little water causes him to lose control of his plane. Mickey falls out of the Bird of Paradise and into the river, and is attacked by man-eating piranha in the water. His wristlink falls off and he de-transmutes, but he is in such distress from the piranha that he does not realize it.

A group of local children at the edge of the jungle save Mickey, and when he comes out of the water they ask him his name. Mickey says that he can’t tell them, but he can say that he is an Eagle Rider. The kids laugh at this, as Mickey doesn’t realize that he is now in his civvies, nor does he realize that his pants have fallen to his ankles. So, first you blow your secret identity, and then you expose yourself to the locals… both literally and figuratively! It’s been a banner day for you, Mickey!

One of the kids, a girl named Gabriella, is very pretty, and Mickey is attracted to her. How old is Mickey anyhow? I didn’t think he was anywhere close to the age where he would notice girls that way. The other boys tell him that they want to go into the jungle to find a blue orchid to give to Gabriella, which expresses their admiration for her. However, they can’t go into the jungle, because right now there is a monster there. Dun dun dun!

Despite the obvious teaser, Mickey suspects nothing, but he convinces the boys to go into the jungle with him anyway. Just as they are about to leave, the rest of the team arrives in a raft, towing the Bird of Paradise behind them.

Mickey is at first excited to see his teammates, but is angry and disappointed when Hunter says that they will be going into the jungle… without Mickey. The youngest Eagle Rider is ordered to remain at the village. Well, Mickey, what did you expect? You’ve really exhibited an appalling lack of judgment today!

As soon as the other Eagle Riders leave, Gabriella comes to get Mickey. She brings him to the other boys, who ask if Mickey still wants to find the blue orchids. After some dithering and a few batted eyelashes from Gabriella, Mickey agrees. Surprise, surprise!

The other Eagle Riders are hiking through the jungle when they are suddenly attacked by flying, metal-tipped, dark leaves. They transform into Eagle Mode, just in time to avoid the attacking trees and vines. Joe in particular tells the vines who’s boss, using his gun. The Eagle Riders escape, going deeper into the jungle.

Meanwhile, Mickey and the boys have found the blue orchids, but are prevented from picking them by a Vorak tank that appears, driving over and crushing the delicate flowers. Mickey, ever the one to speak without thinking, convinces the other boys to follow the tank.

Mickey and the kids track the tank to the river, and see it delivering a fuel pod to Mallanox’s Mega-Hydrogenerator. Mallanox has a spark of intelligence today, and spots the kids, berating the android driving the tank for leading the locals to the Vorak. Mallanox grabs all of the kids, including Mickey, with a tentacle from his ship, intending to drop them into the river so the piranha can eat them. However Mickey screams that the Eagle Riders will get them, and Mallanox pauses, frantically looking around.

Of course, Mickey is right, and the other Eagle Riders instantly appear, easily defeating Mallanox’s soldiers in a fast fight. Mallanox quickly boards the Tentacle ship, to return underwater to the Mega-Hydrogenerator. The Tentacle ship shoots out of the water, unleashing its deadly Particle Beam at the Ultra Eagle, despite the fact that this weapon hasn’t been tested yet. The weapons is effective… too effective for the Eagle Riders. The Ultra Eagle begins to fall apart, and the team abandons ship.

But don’t worry! Just as it seems that the Vorak will win this encounter, the Mega-Hydrogenerator blows apart. The ship drew too much energy from the river and the storage tanks were unable to deal with this volume of power, so they ruptured. Mallanox’s mistake costs him the victory. Unfortunately, Mallanox’s stupidity leads him to abandon this weapon. We never see it again, although clearly the Vorak were onto something here.

Afterward, Mickey is overjoyed to have won, but Hunter tells him that they didn’t win… it is only that they didn’t lose. They will have to do better in the future if they are to defend the Global Good.
