Ollie anticipates bad news when Dr. Keane gives him a letter from his family.

X26 Coward of the Cosmos

[G-II #30: Ryu Returns Home]

Ollie has received a message from his nephew Benji. Benji’s dad John (Ollie’s big brother) has been fired from his job for fighting. Clearly Ollie comes from a model home. Dr. Keane tells Ollie to go home to deal with the family crisis. I guess he thinks that Ollie can talk some sense into his brother.

Ollie is in the Owl Cat, traveling underwater to his home island, when he encounters an earthquake caused by strange gaseous emissions from the ocean floor. When he contacts Dr. Keane to tell him of this phenomenon, Ollie is told that this is nothing to be concerned about. However, after ending the transmission, Dr. Keane admits to the other Eagle Riders that the gaseous emissions are of grave concern, and orders the team to investigate them. What I don’t understand is why he lied to Ollie about this.

Ollie lands on his home island and covers the Owl Cat with brush to camouflage it. He then de-transforms, because his family does not know that he is an Eagle Rider. Ollie must keep his secret identity to himself. Amazingly enough, Ollie is making a reasonable attempt to be prudent about this.

However, two strange men are observing Ollie, and they are convinced that he is an Eagle Rider.

Not knowing that he is under surveillance, Ollie goes to his brother’s home and greets Benji and John. Benji seems certain that being tough and strong makes someone important, and Ollie has a hard time convincing him otherwise. John is in a leg cast as a result of his fight, and even this doesn’t impress the stupidity of fighting upon Benji.

The three go for a nighttime walk on the beach, and the two strange men we saw earlier attempt to shoot Ollie from a great distance. Unable to hit him, they send out a hail of gunfire, and attack with a number of Vorak androids, shouting that Ollie is an Eagle Rider. Ollie pretends to be hit, and rolls on the ground, moaning and hiding his face. The Vorak are convinced that no one this cowardly could be an Eagle Rider, and they take off. But Ollie’s happiness at having protected his identity is short-lived, because Benji and John are disgusted with him for not fighting back. They walk away, only to be captured a few moments later by Vorak soldiers. Clearly whatever brains that exist in this family are all possessed by Ollie!

Meanwhile, the rest of the team is surveying the ocean water, and Mickey grumbles that Ollie must be having a better time than they are. When Mickey takes a vacation, he’s going to order drinks served in coconuts with paper umbrellas in them, and spend all night doing dancing underneath ‘one of those poles’. Joe is not impressed with Mickey’s bragging. What kind of vacation do you have in mind, Joe? Using your cyborg body to screw with metal detectors at the airport?

Dr. Keane interrupts with a communication, telling the team that he has confirmed that the gaseous emissions are not natural, and he suspects that they are being made by a large machine located in an underground cavern. When the team asks how they will access the cavern, Dr. Keane tells them about a special drilling sub for subterranean exploration that uses liquid oxygen for fuel. Conveniently, it is currently onboard the Ultra Eagle. The team boards the sub, with Kelly piloting, and takes off, sending Theta Lasers to clear a path for them underneath the ocean floor.

Meanwhile, Ollie has discovered that his brother and nephew were abducted by the Vorak, and follows them to a nearby Vorak base. He realizes that the gaseous emissions are coming from the base, and vows to stop it, but for some reason does not contact Dr. Keane about the matter.

Before Ollie can make much progress, Mallanox appears. Ollie (in Eagle Mode) hides but Mallanox, knowing he is there, calls out to him, saying “Come out you Owlish Oaf! It’s naughty of you to come uninvited!” to which Ollie responds, “Oh, really?” Mallanox laughs, saying, “No, O’Reilly. My mother was Irish and my father was an alien. I was an only child and I dress funny.” This flippant comment is actually an interesting analysis of Mallanox’s history, and surprisingly, is even a minor bit of plot reveal for later in the series.

Not having much of a response for this, Ollie continues to hide, but Mallanox brings forth John and Benji, threatening their lives if Ollie does not reveal himself. Reluctantly, Ollie does, and drops his weapon, surrendering to Mallanox to save his family, despite the fact that John and Benji are yelling at him not to do so.

At that moment, the drilling sub breaks through the outer walls of the base, causing an explosion. Out of the flaming wreckage, the other Eagle Riders appear, fighting off an onslaught of Vorak androids. Meanwhile, Ollie rushes to rescue his brother and nephew from the flames.

The base is destroyed, and Mallanox is prevented from using the emissions to cause worldwide earthquakes. However, Ollie’s family now knows that he is an Eagle Rider, and they are proud of him. Whether or not they learned a lesson about fighting is unknown. Does this suffice to defend the Global Good?
