X21 Circuits Down

[G-II #24: G-2 Under Suspicion]

The Vorak attack Aerial City with their Solar Shift Destabilizer, as part of a test of the weapon’s power. Cybercon refuses to tell Mallanox what the weapon does, to which Mallanox pouts, “I’m only your Commander-in-Chief here on the planet. It’s perfectly understandable to keep me in the dark.”

But Cybercon isn’t impressed with Mallanox’s poor track record. Frankly, I give Cybercon a lot of credit. He really is surrounded by incompetents. As to why he can’t find anyone better… that’s a question yet to be answered.

To Mallanox’s surprise and delight, the weapon uses an electro-magnetic field to knock out all computer systems in the affected area. The Eagle Riders also discover this after they approach in the Ultra Eagle and Mallanox turns the weapon on them. The Ultra Eagle’s computer systems are inoperable! Unfortunately, Joe, with his cybernetic body, is also affected by the weapon, and although Kelly notices that he’s not feeling well, he brushes off her concern.

Otto is also affected, and he states that he wants to crash the Ultra Eagle into the ground and fire missiles at a city full of civilians. Now that would be an interesting episode! Hunter and Ollie attempt to wrestle Otto away from the controls, getting shocked multiple times in the process, but eventually Ollie manages to pull Otto’s data tape before the robot burns out. Since the computer systems are all gone (except, for some strange reason, the viewscreens) Hunter tells Ollie to glide the Ultra Eagle down to the ground manually. Ollie is excited, as this is what he loves most about flying. So, wrestling with a psychotic robot excites you, huh, Ollie?

Mallanox sends out androids on hang gliders to attack the defenseless Ultra Eagle, but Hunter, Joe, Kelly and Mickey leave the ship to fight as individuals, while Ollie is landing their warship. Kelly is again concerned about Joe’s health, but he insists that he is okay, and Hunter clears him to fight with them. I love how Kelly is worried about Joe. I think she really cares…

Hunter, Kelly, and Mickey easily take out the flying androids, but Joe lags behind and has trouble, partially because his vision is blurry. After defeating the last android he passes out, and is near death.

Hunter, Kelly and Mickey cannot find Joe, and can only assume that he returned to the Ultra Eagle. But they do not know where to look for him when he is not there either.

Fortunately, Joe has been found by Professor Andro. I guess Andro found Joe by the locator devices in their heads, but how did Andro know that Joe was in trouble?

Professor Andro takes Joe back to his laboratory, and rebuilds him, strengthening his body against the electro-magnetic forces. Stronger, better, faster. Da na na na… Oops, sorry. Six Million Dollar Man break there.

Despite implementing these upgrades, Andro warns Joe that another round of serious exposure to the electro-magnetic radiation could kill him. Joe scoffs at the idea, still thinking of himself invincible. Joe, I thought you were smart. Didn’t this mission teach you anything?

I guess it did teach Joe something. Joe has concluded that he can manioulate this weakness of his to his advantage: he can use it to locate the exact position of the de-stabilizer, by implementing his weakness in the magnetic field as a weird sort of Geiger counter compass.

The other Eagle Riders are attempting to do the same thing Joe has just thought of,  through the use of probes, but are only having minimal success. However they have narrowed down the location of the weapon to an island chain. Yet they do not know which island the device is hidden on.

Joe is having better luck, and has managed to locate the exact island, although he is feeling weak from the electro-magnetic field. Guess those upgrades didn’t help too much. Still think you’re invincible, Joe? He wanders around, looking for the Vorak.

Once Joe finds the base he rushes inside and almost instantly feels better, taking out a number of android soldiers. However Mallanox panics at the intrusion and locks down the area, generating an even stronger field around the weapon. Joe falls to the ground, almost unable to move, his vision blurred. He barely manages to remove a small rocket attachment from his belt, affix it to his gun, and (when his vision clears for a second) shoot it through the closing doors at the Vorak weapon. Joe, I take it all back. You rock!

Joe’s shot hits true, and the Destabilizer explodes, sending a burst of fire into the air, which alerts the other Eagle Riders as to the location of the Vorak base. Since the electro-magnetic field is gone, the Ultra Eagle is able to take out the base with missiles. They then rescue Joe, who is floating in the ocean. Amazing that a man with so many metal parts can still float. Perhaps they have life vests built into Eagle Mode? But Joe smiles and waves, happy that he has defended the Global Good.
