X15 The Island Girl's Secret

[G-II #15: The Pure Heart of G-5]

A strange missile crashes into Del Agua Island. Dr. Keane suspects that the Vorak have developed a new secret weapon, and the Eagle Riders head out in their individual vehicles to investigate. Ollie goes to one of the villages on the island and looks for survivors. At first he finds no one, but then a pretty girl named Keealani comes running toward him. She is being followed by three angry men. The men say that they were out fishing for the last ten days, and now they are returning, only to find that the village is destroyed. The men claim that Keealani did this. Keealani bats her eyelashes at Ollie and says that she was just looking for shells on the other side of the island, and when she came back the village was on fire. She flirts outrageously with Ollie, even hiding behind him so that he can protect her from the men. Ollie falls for her ruse completely, and is obviously smitten with Keealani.

Meanwhile, Mallanox is reporting to Cybercon. The missile that hit Del Agua had gone astray: that was not its intended target. Big surprise: Mallanox screwed up again! Cybercon is worried that information about the Vorak’s new weapon will be leaked to the Global Security Council, but Mallanox assures him that the villagers have been rounded up and sealed inside of a cave so that they cannot talk. This seems like a lot of effort for the Vorak, but perhaps they have some use for the villagers later on?

The rest of the Eagle Riders arrive at Del Agua, and Joe surmises that the fire was set in the village to cover the evidence of what really happened. Not a bad hypothesis, Joe, although it doesn’t work in this case. Hunter takes charge, and for once is more masterful than he appears, even after he opens his mouth. Keealani is impressed with Hunter’s leadership skills, not to mention that tight white uniform revealing rippling muscles. Ollie is more impressed by Keealani’s beauty, and is only paying attention to her.

Keealani tells Hunter that she has ‘important’ information for him and lures the head Eagle Rider to a secluded moonlit beach. Ollie and Kelly show up and watch from a distance. Ollie tells Kelly that he wants to marry Keealani. Kelly replies that he can’t, because then ‘her name would be Keealani Keeawani’. I never thought of that, Kelly!

However, Keealani isn’t interested in Ollie. It turns out that she only wants to get it on with Hunter. She makes small talk, and when Hunter begins to ask about her ‘important’ information, Keealani pushes Hunter down onto the sand and attempts to kiss him. Kelly and Ollie gasp, clearly horrified by this turn of events. Ever the noble leader, Hunter jumps up from the ground, disgusted that Keealani would waste his valuable time this way. He makes it clear that he has no interest in her whatsoever. Of course not! Why would he want an island slut girl when Kelly is available?

Keealani cries on top of a high cliff at being rejected by Hunter. Ollie approaches, telling her that she should apologize to Hunter. I have to say, I’m impressed with Ollie’s emotional maturity in this episode. He’s not mad at Keealani, nor at Hunter, but takes this in stride and still tries to do the ‘right thing’. Comic relief or not, Ollie is a good guy.

Keealani retorts that no one ever liked her, so why should she bother to apologize? Ollie says that he will help her apologize. Going completely off topic, Keealani cruelly mentions a pearl ring she lost over the cliff and into the ocean, demanding that Ollie find it for her, as proof of his loyalty.

In a show of misguided devotion, Ollie does not hesitate to leap off of the cliff, plunging into the ocean below. Okay, this wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but he is an Eagle Rider after all, so it’s not really as dangerous as it looks. Keealani is shocked that Ollie did what she demanded, and wonders if she misjudged Ollie and his sincerity.

In the ocean, Ollie does not see the ring, but manages to find the locator card of the Vorak missile. And on his way, Ollie also discovers a large oyster with a giant pearl in it. He brings the pearl to Keealani, who is overwhelmed by the gesture and begins to cry. She admits to Ollie that she saw the burning missile crash into the ocean in that spot. Wow, so she did have important information after all! It says a lot about how shallow she is that she never revealed it in her lust for, and subsequent anger with, Hunter.

After analyzing the locator card Ollie found, Dr. Keane confirms that the missile was a ‘morphing missile’ that was able to transform into a light plane to fool radar systems. Ironically, the missile’s real target was likely the primary Radar Detection Station two hundred miles north of Del Agua.

Meanwhile, Mallanox has just launched another morphing missile at the Radar Detection Station from his underwater base. The Eagle Riders catch up with the missile and watch it transform into a light plane that resembles a dragonfly, complete with giant bug eyes. They cannot shoot it down as it is flying low over populated villages. How big is this island anyway?

Instead, Hunter and Joe use special launching cords to fly toward the missile. Joe loses his footing and flies off the missile, but manages to land safely in a village. Okay, I’m really surprised that Joe, of all people, loses his footing and falls, but given that, it isn’t surprising that he lands. However Kelly’s gasp of horror at his fall was significant. Does she not have faith in Joe’s abilities, or are there special feelings there? Hmmm…

Hunter makes it inside the dragonfly missile and reprograms its location co-ordinates. He is about to leave when a heavy computer console falls over and lands on top of him, preventing his escape. I guess Hunter isn’t strong enough to lift it, and he calls for help. Onboard the Ultra Eagle, Kelly is technically in charge (as the highest ranking team member aboard) but completely ignoring the chain of command, Ollie rushes off and grabs one of the launching cords. He slides down the cord to the missile, his gloves smoking from the intense friction. Ollie enters the dragonfly, lifting up the console and rescuing Hunter in time for the missile to re-enter the water and return to the Vorak ocean base, destroying it on impact. Seems Hunter re-programmed it to return to its original launching co-ordinates. Pretty smart, Hunter! Wow, did I just say that?

Afterward, Ollie says goodbye to Keealani, who vows to become a better person and remember him whenever she looks at the pearl. Mickey is impressed with Ollie’s techniques with women and asks for advice. Ollie replies that all you need to be successful with women is to be honest and be yourself… and you need to be tall enough. Mickey is suitably discouraged by this final statement, and everyone laughs.
