X14 Abduction and Return

[G-II #14: Red Impulse From Space]

A mysterious UFO appears in the sky, in various locations around the world. It is presumed to be from a heretofore-unknown alien race. The spaceship aliens request a meeting with human representatives from the Global Security Council at a remote island location and the Eagle Riders are selected to attend. Because of the danger involved, Dr. Keane decides to accompany the team on this mission. I’m not sure why Dr. Keane thinks this is more dangerous than any other mission the Eagle Riders routinely go on. I think he was just eager to be in on the meeting and seized upon any excuse he could find.

A man emerges from the spaceship, but he is not an alien. It is Major Benton, a fighter pilot who disappeared a month ago during a fight with the Vorak. Benton says that he can’t recall what happened after the fight, because he blacked out, but he is certain that these aliens rescued him. He also tells Hunter that Hunter’s father is on board the UFO, as he had been rescued by the aliens as well. Interestingly enough, Hunter is in Eagle Mode, so this Major is aware of the identity of the father of the leader of the Eagle Riders.

Hunter and his father, Harley Harris, had been at odds while Hunter was first training with the Eagle Riders. Harley had extended the team’s training indefinitely, so that they would never have to go out on a mission and risk death. Harley loved his son too much to see him die. This seems odd. Why would Harley not protest Hunter’s involvement with the Eagle Riders to begin with, and then later on stall their deployment? It seems that it would have been simpler to forbid Hunter to be involved at all from the start.

However, when the moment came for someone to sacrifice themselves for the Global Good, by piloting a manned missile into a Vorak Radiation Band that was threatening to destroy the Earth, Harley chose himself for the task. Rather than let Hunter do it, Harley picked up Hunter and threw him across the launch bay, taking his son’s place and piloting the missile himself. The missile was destroyed, and Harley died. But now it seems that these events didn’t happen as Hunter has always believed.

At first, Hunter does not believe that his father is alive, because he knows that Harley would have contacted him. Hunter, this is the same guy who lied to you, went behind your back, and threw you across the room. Are you sure about that? But when Benton says that Harley has amnesia and doesn’t remember anyone, Hunter is suddenly convinced and takes off in the Super Hawk to follow the UFO. Unfortunately, his excitement, he forgets all of his piloting skills. Hunter crashes the Super Hawk and is in the hospital for three days. Clearly memories of Harley cause Hunter’s brain to disengage from reality.

Hunter is in a recovery room with only Major Benton in attendance. The moment Hunter wakes up after his accident, he jumps out of bed and begs Benton to take him to the UFO, and the Major reluctantly agrees. They leave without authorization. Dr. Keane sends Kelly, Ollie and Mickey after Hunter, while Joe is sent on a ‘special’ mission.

Climbing the mountains to reach the UFO site, Benton slips and Hunter saves him from falling down the mountain. A locket slips off of Benton’s neck, dropping to the ground and opening to reveal a picture of a small boy inside. It is Mike, the Major’s son. Hunter sees the picture and realizes how selfish he is being. Benton probably wants to see his own son, but instead Hunter is forcing the Major help him with his own problems. Hunter promises to fly Benton wherever he wants to go, once Hunter has been reunited with Harley.

Joe knocks at a door in a strange town, asking for information about Mike Benton. The old man there claims to know nothing, but grins nastily when Joe departs.

After a long trek, Hunter and Benton reach the UFO. Harley is aboard and comes down with an alien accompanying him. Benton appears upset at the onset of the reunion. As Hunter runs to his father, Benton turns around and shoots Harley and the alien. The two disintegrate, revealing forms underneath their ‘bodies. They are discovered to actually be Vorak android soldiers in disguise, and Benton explains that he was forced to lead Hunter into this trap, because the Vorak are holding his son Mike hostage.

In a nearby village, the Vorak android holding Mike hears that Benton turned on them. He is about to kill Mike in retaliation when Joe turns up, saving the boy. Joe contacts Hunter to tell him that Benton’s son is alive. All is well, but Hunter is now angered by the Vorak’s treatment of his personal emotions, and vows revenge. So much for the Global Good being Hunter’s primary motivation in this war.
