X13 Under the Volcano

[G-II #13: Youthful G-2]

This episode recap is dedicated to Springie. She knows why.

Joe infiltrates a Vorak base on his own, grabs a random android Captain and demands that the goon lead him to Mallanox. Surprisingly, the android refuses and calls an alarm. That’s a lot more gumption than the usual Vorak goon demonstrates!

Joe is in the process of fighting his way out of the base when he received some unexpected assistance from a girl named Kathy. Kathy seems to know a lot about Joe.

It turns out that this Vorak base is underneath Tomorrow City, a city powered entirely by clean nuclear power and located next to an extinct volcano. Dr. Keane has told Joe to destroy the base, because if the Vorak take over the subway systems underneath the city, it could be disastrous.

Cybercon lectures Mallanox on letting Joe and Kathy escape, even though the base remains intact. Cybercon had planned on usurping the nuclear power from the city but now that their base has been discovered, he knows that this is no longer possible. He orders Mallanox to drop missiles into the volcano, causing an eruption that will destroy the city.

Mallanox rants to himself that the reason he keeps failing is because his father’s perfection is difficult to live up to. Mallanox smashes a picture of his father that is hanging on the wall. Lukkan’s smiling, purple-masked face crashes to the floor. Interesting how Mallanox wants to blame everyone but himself for his own failures.

Meanwhile, Joe is continuing to follow his orders to destroy the base, being unaware of this development. He is taking a missile through the Tomorrow City subway systems to launch at the base, when he is again joined by Kathy. She talks about being ‘artificial’, and Joe is surprised that she understands how he feels (being a cyborg) so well. Gee, Joe, can’t you guess?

But there’s no time for a guess, as suddenly Joe and Kathy are hit with a high frequency Vorak Ray. The pair have to work together to destroy the emitters and save themselves. Joe seems to resist the Ray better than Kathy does, although they are both affected.

After the Ray is destroyed, Joe is ordered to return to the Ultra Eagle. The rest of the team is at Tomorrow City with a special Magma Solidification Device, which will stop the volcanic eruptions Mallanox’s missiles have begun. The Solidification Device was supposed to be launched on a missile of its own, but that missile is not working and Kelly can’t fix it. The device will have to be activated manually and dropped into the volcano, but this is obviously a dangerous task. Hunter says that he will do it, despite Kelly’s protests about the danger and Mickey’s desire to accompany him. Joe arrives at the Control Center of the Ultra Eagle and punches Hunter in the stomach, knocking him out and taking the device. The other Eagle Riders stare in shock as Joe leaves, declaring that Hunter is too valuable to die in such a mission. Somehow, this all seems a little too convenient. But Joe clearly has some kind of death wish, or perhaps he just thinks that he’s invincible.

Joe meets up with Kathy inside the now-abandoned base, and together they find Mallanox’s office, where he has left a recording and a bomb, both ‘cleverly’ hidden inside a music box with a clown on it. The bomb explodes, but both Joe and Kathy manage to escape its effects. Unfortunately, the room doesn't, and the ceiling comes crashing down on them. After they escape the falling debris, Joe notices a cut on Kathy’s arm showing metal underneath. She is an android who was created by Professor Andro to save the human race, and as an android, she is expendable. Joe, as a cyborg, is mostly human, and is not. This is an interesting moral premise. During this episode Kathy has appeared to be quite human, with needs and emotions of her own. Suddenly all of this is demeaned by the notion that she is an ‘android’. Joe only has worth because he is ‘partly human’. Is this the writers’ way of making the deaths of the Vorak seem to be not such a bad thing?

In any case, feeling justified that she is meant for sacrifice, Kathy stuns Joe with a gun and takes the device from him, but not before leaving him with her scarf as a memento of his first meeting with a ‘real’ android. Somehow, it seems as if she wants the memento to mean more. She takes the device and throws herself into the volcano, stopping the eruption.

Joe struggles to pull himself out of his stunned state, dreaming of the day of his last battle as a full human, before he was turned into a cyborg. When he finally awakens he rushes to the site of the now dormant volcano, expressing a wish that Kathy could have been saved. Joe seems to have developed some genuine feelings for Kathy in the short time they knew each other.

The rest of the Eagle Riders arrive, but Joe brushes them off to be by himself. He wonders why he should mourn an android who wasn’t really human, as he lets Kathy’s scarf drift away in the breeze.
