X11 Second Chance

[G-II #11: The Hypernium 600 Contest!]

A new nuclear submarine is about to be launched, and Hunter and Mickey are on their way to attend the lavish opening ceremonies. I didn’t realize that launching a new submarine was such a big deal that people would come from far and wide to attend the ceremony! Unfortunately, Hunter bought a used car, which has broken down. Guess Hunter didn’t take Joe with him to check out his purchase, and now he is paying the price. Mickey is bemoaning this fact when a pretty girl named Julia shows up in a red convertible and offers to give them a lift. Mickey is instantly smitten and agrees. Hey, maybe Hunter’s bad car purchase wasn’t such a terrible thing after all! Hunter doesn’t seem displeased to be riding with the pretty blonde either.

It turns out that Julia is going to the launching as well, because her brother Jeff is a security agent at the shipyard. But when the three arrive, there is no one to be found. They soon discover why: a large group of robotic Vorak birds have attacked everyone, and now they are after the Eagle Riders and their friend! Shades of Alfred Hitchcock!

Hunter throws his arm protectively over Julia, and the three run toward a door that the survivors of the initial attack have opened for them. They barely make it inside, and Julia is badly hurt in their escape.

So what is the dastardly Vorak plan? Seems that Mallanox is using the birds to threaten the cities of the world, forcing the Global Security Council to hand over their stores of Hyplunium, a powerful new element.

Now at the hospital, Jeff is angry with Hunter and Mickey for not protecting Julia. I somewhat agree. Hunter had his arm around her and is an Eagle Rider for goodness’ sake. How come he is unscathed and Julia is so badly hurt? But regardless, Jeff seems a little too fixated on this.

After Hunter and Mickey leave, Jeff waits as Julia is being operated on by the doctors. But the hospital has to be evacuated due to a potential Vorak attack. Not wanting Julia’s crucial surgery to be delayed too long, Jeff decides to buy time for her by stealing the Hyplunium himself and handing it over to the Vorak. Not the brightest idea in the world, but obviously the guy cares for his sister very much.

The Eagle Riders hear about the theft of the Hyplunium, not knowing that the culprit is Jeff. They pursue the Hyplunium-laden truck fleeing down the highway toward Jeff’s meeting spot with the Vorak: the new freeway interchange. Hunter leaves the Ultra Eagle and glides down to the truck, entering through the passenger window and struggling with Jeff for control of the vehicle. Jeff must be some kind of super-powered guy, because not only was he single-handedly able to steal all of the Hyplunium from a heavily guarded base, but he also gives Hunter a run for his money in this fight.

Eventually, Hunter causes the truck to crash, before it can reach the meeting place with Mallanox. I’m a little surprised that the Hyplunium doesn’t explode, seeing as it is so powerful, but this appears not to be an issue.

Meanwhile, it turns out that the highway interchange is actually the hiding place for Mallanox’s new robot. The robot reveals itself, and releases wave after wave of birds. The remaining Eagle Riders, under Joe’s command, are able to use a Magnetronic Missile to avoid the birds, but eventually there are too many for this technique to work.

The birds combine to form a giant bird cloud bigger than the Ultra Eagle, covering the ship entirely. Between Joe’s flying (I had no idea that Joe was a super pilot!) and Kelly’s use of the deflector shields, the Eagle Riders manage to remove the birds from the hull, defeating them. Mickey and Ollie are slammed into the back wall of the bridge in the process, having neglected to fasten their seatbelts. I guess they weren’t of much use on this particular mission! The Eagle Riders then proceed to destroy Mallanox’s robot through the use of the Fire Eagle Mode.

Jeff awakens, and Hunter tells him that he knows that Jeff was doing this for Julia’s sake, and that he knows that Jeff has learned that what he did was wrong. Now, how did Hunter know this? He’s in Eagle Mode, and Jeff shouldn’t know who Hunter is. But that little fact is glossed over, as Hunter says that he will inform the Global Security Council that the Eagle Riders were in on this plan, and that Jeff stole the Hyplunium as a decoy for Mallanox. Wow, Hunter, talk about nepotism! Between this and his open-handed forgiveness of Dr. Embry a couple of episodes ago, Hunter is really turning out to be an overly-generous guy!

Jeff is grateful for his second chance, and when Julia recovers from surgery, he tells her that Hunter is a better friend than she will ever know.
