X10 Deep Freeze in the South Seas
[G-II #10: Snowstorm at the Equator]
Ollie reminisces about his wonderful childhood growing up in the islands of the South Pacific. However, it seems that the island of his childhood has been hit by a freak storm that froze the area and the ocean waters around it. Dr. Keane discovers that the Vorak are using the Earth’s magnetic field to manipulate the weather through a hole in the Van Allen Belt and orders the Eagle Riders to investigate.
Over the ocean, Joe prepares to go out in the Falcon Tracker, but Ollie asks if he can go instead. He feels a personal connection to these islands, since he grew up here. Hunter agrees. However, the Owl Cat is pulled into a strange current and crashes just offshore of another island.
Ollie fears he will be eaten by sharks that are surrounding his stranded vehicle. I guess since he grew up in the area, Ollie is used to such things, as he prepares to shoot his gun at the sharks. But the Eagle Rider is stopped from doing so by an old man named Akaha, who literally knocks the gun out of Ollie’s hand.
Turns out the sharks are Akaha’s pets. Akaha lives on the island alone, as the other people in his tribe left when the food supply vanished because a ‘devil’ took over the reef and chased away the fish. Hmmm…. sounds suspicious! Ollie stays with the man, caring for him when he becomes ill after his island turns cold. This might be because Ollie is a nice guy, or because Akaha cooked fish for Ollie. There’s a great scene where Ollie eats the fish through his Eagle Mode visor. Gotta love the magic of cartoons.
Hunter and Kelly find Ollie, and convince him to help them save the planet from the Vorak, even though it means leaving Akaha behind to die of his illness. Ollie is at first reluctant (guess the friendship was based on more than fish) but Akaha insists that Ollie go, and tells the Eagle Rider to take his spear, which will protect Ollie.
Onboard the Ultra Eagle, the team encounters a strong magnetic force from a Vorak robot, which disables the ship. Inexplicably, Joe is in pain and clutches at his head. What’s going on with Joe? But this is ignored because of the immediate threat to the ship.
Ollie goes to the top of the Ultra Eagle and throws Akaha’s spear into the Vorak robot. The spear, being made of wood and not metal, is unaffected by the magnetic field. Fortunately, Ollie has attached explosives to the spear, as one wooden spear isn’t enough to destroy an entire robot all by itself, no matter how well it is thrown.
The explosives destroy the Vorak ship, freeing the Ultra Eagle and allowing the Eagle Riders to defeat the Vorak yet again.
Back on Akaha’s island, Ollie mourns the death of his friend, who passed away during the battle. What good is it to defeat the Vorak if their friends die? Is this the price of the Global Good?
