X7 Camouflage

[G-II #7: Terrifying Mutation Plot]

Mallanox has created an alien space plant that grows rapidly. He wants to use it to hide and protect their latest base from the Eagle Riders, as the team has a tendency to blow up Vorak bases. Wow, Mallanox learns fast! And investing in defense (rather than offense) seems like a new strategy. Let’s hear it for some original thinking!

However, when bringing the test seed out to the wilderness for an experiment, the Vorak androids lose it when it is carried away on the wind. Typical! Mallanox screws up a good idea by leaving it in the hands of the stereotypical idiot goons. He hasn’t learned everything yet.

The seed ends up being found by Harry, a boy who has a strong interest in botany.

Kelly and Mickey are taking some children on a hike, and Mickey is left carrying all of the gear while Kelly and the children walk off. Kelly tells Mickey to hurry up. Is she deliberately being cruel, or just clueless? Poor Mickey is struggling along with all of the heavy gear and she’s just waltzing around. Maybe it’s a punishment she’s giving him because he messed up something earlier?

In any case, Mickey sits down, bemoaning a blister on his toe, while everyone else walks off, abandoning him. Completely co-incidentally, a boy named Harry shows up and uses wormwood to cure Mickey's blister.

Mickey is impressed, especially when it turns out that Harry is also interested in science (specifically, botany). Mickey tells the viewers that he doesn’t have many friends because it’s hard to find other boys his own age who are interested in science. Tell me, Mickey, why can't you have friends who are interested in non-scientific things?

To thank him for curing his blister, Mickey brings some botanical samples as a present to Harry’s apartment. I think he lifted them from Dr. Keane’s giant office at Gateway City.

As Mickey arrives, he finds Harry experimenting on the strange seed he found in the woods. Before their astonished eyes, the plant grows rapidly out of control, spreading across the room and knocking over Harry’s case of caterpillars. But just as the plant is about to strangle Harry and Mickey, the caterpillars eat the plant, causing it to shrink and die. The caterpillars then create chrysalis and emerge as giant butterflies that fly away. The maturation process for the butterflies is extremely rapid and occurs within a minute or so.

At Kelly's Snack Bar, Kelly, Ollie, and Hunter laugh at Mickey’s crazy story of a killer plant, but Joe is not so disbelieving, stating that the Vorak are capable of anything. No one is laughing once Dr. Keane informs the team of a plant attack in Daly City and shows pictures of a destroyed town. The others apologize to Mickey. I’m glad they’re big enough people to do this! It makes me respect the team a lot more.

Everyone pays close attention as Mickey describes how the caterpillars defeated the vines.

In Daly City, a police car is caught by the sinister vines. Fortunately, the policemen are able to get out of the car before it explodes (how convenient), but we can clearly see that the vines are now offensive, rather than just defensive.

The Ultra Eagle flies to Daly City, dropping canisters of caterpillars on the plant. It seems that once the plant’s skin is broken and it is exposed to the air on Earth, it dies, as something in the Earth’s atmosphere is toxic to the Vorak plant. The caterpillars destroy the plant and eventually fly away as butterflies, leaving the Vorak base wide open to destruction from the Eagle Riders. Once the base is gone, the Global Good has been restored.
