X5 Primal Instinct

[G-II #5: Mystery of the Caneman Attack]

The Eagle Riders are out for a motorcycle ride, during which they express their happiness that Joe has returned. Kelly and Mickey declare that everything is more fun since Joe has come back to the team. Kelly seems to be especially happy that Joe is back. Hmmm…. there I go wondering again.

The Eagle Riders stop their ride to watch people boarding the Seafoam: a colony ship headed for the remote area of Phaedra. A small boy named Cory approaches them. He is lost, and Kelly returns him to his parents before they board the ship.

Later, at Gateway City, Dr. Keane informs the team that the colonists have disappeared, and in their place are a strange group of large Neanderthals. These Neanderthals are running rampant and destroying cities. Hmmm…. colonists disappear and Neanderthals appear… everyone is stumped. Whatever could have happened?

Despite the insistence of the Global Security Council that the Neanderthals be destroyed, Dr. Keane resists, declaring them to be humans. The Eagle Riders are sent to investigate. They find a destroyed settlement, and Cory, who amazingly is alive and unhurt.

It turns out that Mallanox has used a Neanderthal Ray to transform the settlers into primitive humans, and is using that same ray to control their minds, forcing them to attack the cities. Mallanox laughs at the idea of humans being destroyed by their own selves.

Returning to Gateway City with Cory, the Eagle Riders are diverted when they hear of the Neanderthals attacking a nearby city. Mallanox sends an electrical beam attack at the Ultra Eagle, causing it to crash land. Joe recovers first, then wakes up the others. Kelly awakens to discover that Cory has wandered off.

Cory wanders through the ruined city, and his shoe gets caught in a grate just as the Neanderthals are about to attack him. Hunter saves the boy, and the team battle the Neanderthals without injuring them. They are reluctant to hurt ‘human beings’.

However, despite his close call, Cory wanders off yet again, and this time meets a single Neanderthal whom he recognizes as his father. Amazing how this toddler recognizes what has happened when brilliant scientists such as Dr. Keane have not. What does that say about the ISO and the Global Security Council?

Cory’s face, words, and tears trigger his father’s memories, and unconsciously this Neanderthal fights back, managing to overload Mallanox’s Mind Control Ray and destroying the Vorak ship in the process. The Neanderthals are immediately all transformed back into humans, and Cory is reunited with his family. The Global Good has been restored.
