X4 Reunion

[G-II #4: Has Joe Returned?]

Mallanox is speaking with Cybercon when a defect in the Vorak base causes a massive explosion in the Earth’s mantle. This in turn causes a continuous earthquake that is slowly destroying the Southwest United States. Of course, this was entirely a mistake on Mallanox’s part, but the Vorak Leader is quick to take advantage of the situation. Mallanox brags to the people of Earth about the power of the Vorak.

Not knowing why these earthquakes are happening, Dr. Keane has developed a special Seismic Probe that will find out what is causing the quakes. He decides to go with the Eagle Riders onboard the Ultra Eagle to deploy the probe. However, after returning from the deployment, the Eagle Riders attempt to board their individual vehicles, only to discover that Vorak androids are hiding within. I’ll bet that’s the last time Hunter ever leaves the keys in his plane!

All seems doomed, until a mysterious stranger on a one-man helicopter saves them. Kelly is convinced that the man is Joe and chases after the stranger, screaming Joe’s name, but no one comes to acknowledge her cries. Kelly seems to have a strong attachment to Joe, as every time the team encounters evidence of his survival, she seems to grow more and more desperate in her cries. Hmmm....

In order to stop the continuous earthquake, a special missile now has to be deployed underground at a very specific location. The missile has been attached to the Falcon Tracker, Joe’s old vehicle. Unfortunately, a skilled driver is required to operate the vehicle and shoot the missile, and Dr. Keane has had to send to the Global Security Council for someone to do the job. Hunter insists on performing the task, even though Dr. Keane is not certain that Hunter can do it. Hunter, of course, refuses to understand that if he takes the car and can’t complete the mission, then the Global Good is truly sunk.

A strange song is heard whistling in the air, and the team turns to see a strange figure walking toward them from across the desert. Strangely enough, the figure is dressed in black (in the middle of the hot desert) and whistling ‘When the Ants Come Marching In’. It’s an odd choice of song, but no one seems to notice. Kelly, Mickey and Ollie are convinced it is Joe, and run to meet him. Perhaps Joe is fond of ants?

Hunter and Dr. Keane aren’t so sure of the man’s identity, but they follow the others anyway. Lucky for them, it is Joe. Mickey and Ollie have a happy reunion, and Kelly and Joe share an emotional and tearful embrace. Now I’m really thinking that there’s something going on between Kelly and Joe. This is just too significant to be a ‘great to see you again’ moment.

Clearly Hunter isn’t impressed, as he chooses to greet Joe by punching him in the jaw. Joe throws Hunter in the air, and once he lands, Hunter accepts that his old friend is back. This seems like an odd reason to accept that Joe is who he appears to be, but who knows what kind of strange relationship Hunter and Joe had before Joe’s disappearance?

Dr. Keane welcomes Joe as well, and the team deduces that indeed, it has been Joe who has been helping them in secret, all of this time. Wow, they figured that out all by themselves?

Just then, a large Vorak Serpent robot rises from the ground, interrupting the reunion.

Joe boards the Falcon Tracker and drives underground, shooting the specialized missile. He is caught in the blast, and the Tracker is completely destroyed. But Joe manages to emerge unscathed, just as the Ultra Eagle destroys the robot. Joe declares that he hates the Vorak and just wants to see them destroyed, and Hunter tells him that the best way to do that is to rejoin the Eagle Riders. Joe seems uncertain at first, but then agrees.

The team wants to know where Joe has been, but he does not reveal much, only saying that he was in the care of Professor Andro. Surprisingly, they accept that and don’t push for more answers. Frankly, if I were in charge of the Global Good, I’d be more suspicious, but perhaps I’m just a cynic.

Dr. Keane officially reinstates Joe Thax as second in command of the Eagle Riders.
