X3 Visit to Alcatraz
[G-II#3: The Black Knights From Hell]
Cybercon and Mallanox are deep in discussion when Cybercon detects an intruder in the Vorak base. The man escapes, despite being directly hit in the back by Vorak weapon fire. Who is the mysterious intruder? Hmmm… I have a few guesses…
At Gateway City, Dr. Keane plays a tape for the team of a mysterious message. The message warns that a train full of plutonium will be hijacked by the Vorak very shortly. The voice sounds amazingly like Joe’s, and the team wonders if it could really be their missing comrade.
The Ultra Eagle launches, and Hunter gets everyone in the mood with a rousing chorus of ‘Eagle Riders, what’s our mission?’ to which the others respond, ‘To defend the Global Good!’. And yes, this pretty much happens every episode until the team stops launching in the same ship. But I digress.
The Eagle Riders set off to meet up with the train, but enroute hear about a Vorak attack in Philadelphia. Hunter takes the Super Hawk and goes to deal with the train robbery, while the rest of the team heads to Philadelphia, because splitting up makes the team so much more effective. Whatever happened to ‘always five, acting as one’? Oh wait, wrong show…
It turns out that the train is indeed hijacked, just as the taped message predicted. Hunter is able to prevent the Vorak from obtaining the plutonium onboard, and in the process discovers that the Black Guardsmen used by the Vorak in this operation are actually escaped human convicts being controlled by a mind ray.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team has dealt with the trouble in Philadelphia, and together they surmise that the Vorak are building a base below the old Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. The way they come up with this is pretty sketchy, but it’s the best lead they’ve got, so they follow it through.
The team members all meet up and head to Alcatraz. Mickey is sent underwater in his Bird of Paradise to investigate the island, but the water is so murky that he cannot see anything. He is about to leave when a voice comes on his communications system, ordering him to fire at a specific spot. Mickey, believing the voice to be Hunter, follows the instructions, although he’s not sure why he is doing this. Wait a minute, this is the kid who disobeyed orders last episode when the hand statue was firing at him, and he picks now to blindly obey an unknown voice?
Meanwhile, Ollie is investigating the island prison from above. He falls into an old well, and finds a hole at the bottom into the Vorak base. He is quickly captured by the androids and Mallanox, but the arrival of the rest of the team saves him.
Ollie wonders how they got there and Mickey says that it was all Hunter’s doing, as the orders to shoot the missile openedup a hole in the base through which they could enter. Hunter denies having told Mickey to shoot the missile. However, given that they are surrounded by alien androids, they are unable to finish the conversation (good call, guys) and the prerequisite fight ensues.
Of course, the Eagle Riders win, and afterward Hunter pulls a bomb out of his boot heel and sets the timer. The Eagle Riders are about to escape the doomed base when Mallanox unexpectedly traps them in a force field box. The Eagle Riders use their Cyclone Technique to escape, despite the fact that this is extremely dangerous without Joe. They manage to survive and are found floating in the San Francisco Bay after the explosion.
