X2 Temple Island

[G-II #2: The Mysterious Feather Shuriken]

Mickey moves against Hunter’s orders and is hurt. Serves you right, Mickey! The team cannot figure out a way to fight the statue. They are just getting desperate when a bomb inside the statue goes off and it is destroyed. The Eagle Riders do not know who set the bomb, but they run away from the scene, only to find Zarnec.

Surprise! Zarnex is an android… and he has been ‘deactivated’ by a feather stunner! The Eagle Riders make a big deal here of noting that Zarnec is an android (and therefore not a person) and so he isn’t ‘dead’, but to the show’s credit, the emphasis on that particular issue dwindles quickly in later episodes. This is the one time the series fully establishes that the Vorak are generally not human, and so it is ‘okay’ if they are ‘killed’.

It turns out that feather stunners were Joe’s weapon of choice, and the Eagle Riders, particularly Kelly, wonder if Joe is possibly still alive. (Note that later in the series, Joe's weapons are called feather 'darts'.) Hunter declares that Joe is not alive, and that the Eagle Riders need to forget about him. However, the team sees footsteps and a silhouette that looks amazingly like Joe, and they follow it to an underground pathway. Hunter, if you really believe it’s not Joe, then it must be a trap. So why are you following? Methinks you protest too much…

Coming out on the other side of the pathway, the team finds a large Vorak base, and they sneak through it to return to the Ultra Eagle. How do they accomplish this? Why, by hiding inside of a coal car, of course! As expected, by choosing that mode of transportation, the Eagle Riders ensure that they get dumped on by a load of coal. What a great disguise!

After boarding the Ultra Eagle, the team emerges in their individual vehicles: the Super Hawk (Hunter), the Dove Cycle (Kelly), the Bird of Paradise (Mickey), and the Owl Cat (Ollie). They proceed to attack the Vorak base and the android army, however they are unable to prevent Mallanox from beginning the launch sequence of a missile that will destroy the Earth.

Hunter sees the tower from which the missile is being controlled, and flies the Super Hawk through it, causing havoc among the Vorak. He comes back around for a second pass, barely making it through as he shoots a missile into the tower from the inside. Frankly, it seems somewhat risky to go back in for a second pass after already making a first pass flying through the base, but perhaps Hunter knew what he was doing. Naaaah….

The Super Hawk barely manages to make it out of the base a second time, and spins out of control in the resulting explosion, crashing in the nearby jungle. Kelly, Mickey and Ollie are unable to locate Hunter, and the Super Hawk is about to explode.

Dazed, Hunter recalls the faces of his teammates, including Joe. Then he sees Joe and speaks with him, asking if he is still alive; or is it just a dream?

Hunter awakens in a cave with the rest of the Eagle Riders and an older man named Professor Andro. Andro used to work for the Vorak, and even developed their androids, but now works against them. He declares that he was the one inside the base who deactivated Zarnec, and the one who rescued Hunter. For some reason, the team buys it. I guess they’re really positive that Joe is dead…

Or maybe not. Hunter is convinced, but the rest of the team isn’t so certain. It sure seemed like Joe…
